This is a really weird question but why don't you ever hear of the breeding season affecting actively racing horses? Obviously those in breeding careers it does, but do racing males get aggressive with each other and try to you know, uh romance racing fillies? Humans have altered these horses' natural habits in so many ways but surely this is one thing people can't control…

Well, where racehorses are kept to themselves, it’s not really much of a problem. They’re mostly just kept in their stalls and only come out to exercise or travel. However, in company, there are horses who savage others and who drop to show they’re a stallion. There’s been some stories of colts trying to get the attention of fillies during races that I’ve heard, but those are few and far between. Human intervention and their “isolation” keep them mostly occupied during their racing career, I think.

I loved last year when you did the posts from past breeders cups, could you do that again? Thanks! Also any early thoughts on any of the races?

I can certainly try! I’ll post some moments from the 2000′s since the last one was about the 80′s and 90′s.

For the Classic, I’m feeling pretty comfortable with Accelerate, but I’m sentimental toward Catholic Boy and Mendelssohn too. For the Mile, my pick is Oscar Performance. Past BC race winner, a seasoned racer. And oh my god, the Distaff is so hard to pick…but Monomoy Girl. No, Abel Tasman. No, Monomoy Girl. Wait–

How did you get into horse racing? Do you have an book or reading recommendations for someone interested in working in a track office or breeding farm?

It was a natural progression. I’ve always been into horses, and had a few select racehorses that I was a fan of, but where I’m from, it’s mostly all Tennessee Walkers. Then I moved to Lexington for college, and it blossomed from there. I just got immersed in it. As far as reading, I believe I just have racehorse biography books, but there seems to be some good selections on Amazon. Does anyone else have any recommendations?

I was on Ebay and louievilcat is selling some winner circle pictures of Ruffian. Since she’s your favorite race horse, I thought I’d tell you about them.

Awww, thank you so much! That’s so kind of you! <3

Do you know where I could find things out about a mare? Her name is Irish Emotion but I have no idea if she ever raced or not

Thanks tumblr, for keeping my messages a secret from me. I’m so sorry about that. But yep, she raced 13 times, mostly in claimers, and had one win, two seconds, and two third place finishes. She had $11,183 in earnings. Not a bad horse by any means. You can find records on equibase, usually.

Do you happen to know whether it’s possible to visit Ruffian’s grave at Belmont?

I remember reading a blog post of someone who called ahead and was given permission to visit.

Do you have an early Derby pick? I’m liking the way Justify moves and the way he’s built but he’s not even eligible points wise yet.

I usually pick my Derby favorites on their past performances, and I really like McKinzie. Justify is looking like a promising horse in general, Derby or not.
